Is it normal for the site of a tetanus shot to get more painful, bruised, and red days after the shot?!

Question: Is it normal for the site of a tetanus shot to get more painful, bruised, and red days after the shot.?
I had a tetanus shot three days ago. The first night, it wasn't sore at all. the next day, it started to bruise a little, but wasn't bad. Yesterday, there was a 1 inch bruise around it, and today, the bruise is darker and more painful, and there is a large red oval area under it. The whole area is swollen, tender, and hard. Is this normal.?Health Question & Answer

My first tetnat shot left my arm feeling like it was on fire. It hurt, burned and left my arm useless for 3 days. I dont' remember if there was a bruise or not it was a long time ago, but I remember the burn and the pain of trying to use my arm.Health Question & Answer

Hey,

It is very normal. Injections don't normally hurt but the "Tetanus" always does. Please keep up to date with your tetanus shots/boosters as if you are not, it will be very painful if you fell over and the doctors have to put it in the middle of your sore, that is a really painful experience as they will not give it to you while you are asleep. You have to be awake while they give you pain by putting that injection into you.Health Question & Answer

Yes, this can happen. The last one I had even made my armpit hurt all the way down past my breast. Luckily, I had the nurse give it on my "non-dominant" arm, so I could still write.
You can try a cool compress, but tetanus shots are just bad like that.
Can you still see the actual hole where you got the injection.? If you can and it is discolored or you've got liquid or pus coming out, call the doc ASAP.
Hope it feels better soon.Health Question & Answer

Yes, it is normal. Tetanus shots are wicked. The last time I had a tetanus shot I was sick for 4 or 5 days just from the pain in my arm. I gradually felt better, but I could still feel a little pain and tenderness in my arm for 3 months after the shot. Health Question & Answer

yes. to some degree. if the site continues to be painful, raised or begins to ooze anything, i'd make an appointment to rule out a secondary infection from the injection.

Health Question & Answer

Actually, yes it is pretty normal for the site of the injection to hurt. The best thing to do, is use the arm and keep working the muscle. It helps it heal faster and believe it or not, it eases the pain.Health Question & Answer
