The symptom that is normally portrayed on TV is called cataplexy. It is one part of narcolepsy, but not the whole thing. Cataplexy is a complete loss of muscle tone in your body. Other symptoms include, waking paralysis, night terrors, excessive daytime sleepiness (even with proper sleep at night) and partial loss of muscle tone (like in the face, neck or legs)

Narcolepsy can present as one, some or all of these symptoms. I have narcolepsy and have all of the symptoms except for the cataplexy. My birthfather has narcolepsy and he loses muscle tone in his face when experiencing extreme emotions. My friend who experiences cataplexy says that she can still here what's going on, but can't move. She usually tries to fall asleep when it happens and wakes up like normal after an hour.

As long as they are in a comfortable position, leave them alone. They'll be fine.Health Question & Answer
