Why can't we just quarantine AIDS ?!

Question: Why can't we just quarantine AIDS .?
I was sitting in an elective class called 'medical geography'

And during a discussion this one guy went on into a long monologue about how the aids problem would be much simpler if we just quarantined the cases. Yet many people in the class (especially women ) watched him like he was crazy.

But I can see his point.

I mean let's face it no matter how much sex ed we give to the people, no matter how available we make condoms, people are still gonna have unprotected sex.

No matter how much we try teach AIDS patients healthy behaviours, some people will still intentionally ignore medical advice.

What his point was, instead of wasting so much money DESPERATELY trying to tell people the right thing to do, what we should do is

1) make AIDS test compulsary to the entire nation.
2) quarantine all cases discovered.

I mean seriously, as long as we keep aids patients free in society, there is nothing preventing them from spreading the disease if they choose too.

I think this is just another case of, the answer being right in front of us, but because it seems harsh, we choose to struggle instead.

All these "sex-education" programmes will never eliminate AIDS.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I would be with you on this, but like 1 person said above me about the symptoms showing
EX:
We tested the entire nations right.? We come up with 12million that are infected, we put them away from the rest of society, it takes 6 weeks after sex to be able to tell if they have HIV or not. Saying that maybe 3,000 would be left in society undetected, we couldn't keep testing the nation every so often. BUT if people where sentenced to the death sentences for having HIV/AIDS or Herpes also then everyone would be more cautious about who they have sex with. Even though theres a chances it would still not be totally gone, but the percentage that are infected would be so small it would make no difference. (But we are not in a communism country unfortunately)Health Question & Answer

Because people are not animals. we are all equals, and deserve our own freedom. people dont choose to have aids, so you cant punish them for something that is beyond their control. I dont have aids, but i still think thats sick. Yeah its a problem in society, but no more than any other deathly disease is. If someone was to quarantine all people with aids, it would be as bad as hitler exterminating the jewish. It immoral.Health Question & Answer

Besides the fact that the quarantine you propose is unethical, it is also impossible. Remember, most people have NO symptoms for years, and many people pass the virus on to others before they realize that they themselves are infected.

That said, I do wish HIV testing would be mandatory, at least for people in high risk groups.Health Question & Answer

That's actually a brilliant idea that I never thought of before. But it is a bit inhumane so I see the people who frowned upon this idea.

In a way it reminds me of the movie "I Am Legend" because of how they quarantined a whole city full of sick people.Health Question & Answer

you are an idiot. you should have some knowlege of something before you actually try to ask a serious question about it. moron.Health Question & Answer

That's a bad idea and I will keep my answer brief, less I go off on the unethicality of it.

First, it's unethical.

Secondly, unlike other diseases, AIDS is not contagious in the way that you can just catch it. You have to put yourself at risk, so as long as you use condoms and use clean syringes if you inject drugs, you have low risk. And you can ask your partners to get a HIV test (as you should too) before you engage in sex.

People who are HIV are not putting people at risk. people who are making poor decisions are putting themselves at risk. we have control over whether or not we are at risk for the disease. Why should we quarenteen those that have the disease.?

TB is a disease that we do quarenteen people for. IF they are not taking the medication. Why.? Because people with TB can spread the disease to anybody that is in the same room as them. TB is curable, so the person would be isolated for a short period of time. Their personal freedom is taken away for a brief time for the safety of the public. HIV/AIDS is very different because HIV positive people can not spread the disease just by simple contact. HIV positive people can not be cured and we can not ask them to be quarenteened for the rest of their lives. They pose no risk to the general public.

HIV education is important so that people know the risks, know the disease and understand the consequences. We can not get rid of this and sadly it is not as effective as it should be, but that doesn't mean it isn't important. Health Question & Answer

Why cant we.? Because it won
