In some people, it is a long, slow recovery and with others, it is relatively quick. A lot depends on their age and their general attitude towards their recovery. An active person can expect about 6-8 weeks of healing, about another 12 weeks before they really feel well. Depression is often common during the recovery period and a short course of an anti-depressant may be helpful. Depending on the type of job that is performed, a person might be able to go back to work between 8 and 12 weeks after surgery. Your physician can give you a better idea about this time frame, depending on your occupation. People can lead long, productive lives after a bypass but a lot depends on their outlook on life in general. Health Question & Answer

I personally had by pass surgery in April of this year. Had four by passes. I feel 100% better! I was off work for six weeks and returned to full duty. I work at WalMart in the receiving department which is a physically demanding job. I suppose mine went so well because they caught it before I had a heart attack, don't know for sure. I do know my husband had a heart attack and had triple bypass surgery and it was horrible for him. I am so thankful that mine went so well. I was up and driving in one week and doing anything I wanted to do, within reason of course.
Health Question & Answer

The difference this surgery makes is life and death. The clogged arteries can cause a sever heart attack that could be fatal. When revascularized through bypass surgery it gives a person a chance at a normal healthy life. (lifestyle changes may be necessary)

Unfortunately, you may have to ease back into your heavy work. It will take a while to heal your chest completely. Remember, they will be breaking your chest apart to repair the vessels in your heart.

Hopefully within a few months you will be better than ever!!Health Question & Answer

It depends on how old you are and what kind of physical shape you're in. You can lead a relatively normal life, but I would not recommend any strenuous activity, such as jogging, running, heavy lifting, etc. For one thing, they will take the vein out of your leg to use as veins in the bypass, so your leg will be very weak for a long time and you won't be able to jog anyway. I had to take care of both my mom and dad for about 6 months, cooking and cleaning, etc., till my dad was able to resume those duties. So, I would say you will probably be off from work at least 5-6 months.

My dad lived 9 years after his surgery. But he died from kidney failure, not a heart problem. My uncle lived 13 yrs. after his surgery.Health Question & Answer

My uncle had it done about 6 years ago. He had lots of complications with it, they had to go in and stretch the stomach a couple times because he was starving to death.Health Question & Answer
