Question: Has anyone been on Accutane.?
My best friend is going on it in 30 days for acne. I know a little about it and I read about some of the side effects that go along with it. I would like your opinions about the drug...did it help.?...were the side effects really bad.? Any information is great but personal experiences would be better. First of all, your friend should know all the major and common side effects of going on Accutane, she should be on the iPLEDGE program.
Second, tell your friend, TO ALWAYS BE PATIENT.
Most people suffer from an initial breakout, which last 1 or two months, maybe less, and from there it gets better. WAY BETTER. maybe sometimes, youll breakout a little during the course, but be patient. Accutane is pushing all the bad stuff out and drying up the sebum or the oils that create acne, and also preventing the bacteria from growing. It's also making your body used to not producing lots of oils. 60% dont have acne any more after Accutane, and the rest dont have acne as bad as before. Most people clear up by the end of the third month. But dont stop even if youre clear, go on the full course her dermatologist recommended.
Thrid, Tell your friend to not pick at at her acne, because afterwards it'll look like she got shot in the face from the scarring. Accutane thins out your skin and makes it more sensitive. All the red marks and scars will quickly fade away after taking Accutane. If shes impatient with the redness, tell her to find PURE REFINED 100%EMU OIL, with no added oils or ingredients, this will help ALOT. Then again, she can always use makeup.

Fourth. Only use a cleanser and moisturizer. Use Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser and Cerave Moisturizer. NO Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid, like I said, her skin will thin out. For her lips, tell her to buy Aquaphor Healing Ointment. She should put this on her lips, when they start to dry up and get chappy ALOT. If she ever gets dry patches on her body, just put the Aquaphor there too, itll clear up in a few days. Buy eye-drops, if her eyes gets dry, if she wears contacts, itll feel irritating, so just wear glasses for now. If she gets nosebleeds, buy saline solutions for the nose.

They warn you of it's potency and potential side effects. The doctors are well aware of these and usually require frequent blood tests while you are on it to be sure it isn't messing you up. I don't think it's that dangerous if you pay attention to the doctor.
I used it for four months and it was very successful. The side effect I noticed most was extreme dryness. Carrying a tube of vaseline lip care and contact lens rewetting solution was essential--my eyes and lips were constantly drying out, and fortunately, so was my skin. also note that there are strong warnings to not get pregnant. My doctor told me he won't prescribe this to any woman who is not on birth control, because a baby conceived while on accutane would have such a high chance of birth defects that it would be time to seriously consider an abortion and he wants to avoid that situation.
Accutane does the job and has problems that go with it. It was completely worth the risk to me--I had cystic acne that causes scars and is very ugly to look at in the first place. If I would have had acne that was less vicious, I probably would have tried a less dangerous solution.Health Question & Answer

Horrible experience
It didn't help my skin (I had mild acne)
It made my lips so dry they would crack and bleed. It dehydrated me terribly
And it made me depressed to the point I was actually felling a bit suicidal
