I think I've had a mild UTI for the last week; I don't want to take anti-biotics but is it ok to ignore?!

Question: I think I've had a mild UTI for the last week; I don't want to take anti-biotics but is it ok to ignore.?
Basically the only symptom I've had is that it is a bit itchy down there sometimes, usually just before I go to the toilet and then it's fine after I do. It also stings a little bit when I go but I think that's possibly because I scratched myself, as it doesn't always sting, and it never stings very much. How likely is it to become a problem and can is it safe to just wait for it to go away by itself.?Health Question & Answer

it could be a yeast infxn or uti.. I would make sure to take plenty of fluids drink cranberry juice and see if you still have problems. UTI's can become kidney infxns if ignored so I'd make sure if you have increase in pain, a fever, etc to contact your doctor.Health Question & Answer

You should see a doctor to get an accurate diagnosis. If it is a UTI, it will not go away on its own. You will need antibiotics. Untreated UTI can lead to kidney damage.

Edit: Untreated UTI WILL lead to PERMANENT SEVERE KIDNEY DAMAGE. Severe kidney damage could lead to the need for dialysis treatments. UTI will NOT go away by itself. Do NOT ignore your symptoms. You MUST see a doctor to find out for sure what is causing your symptoms, and if you DO have a UTI, you MUST take the ENTIRE course of antibiotics the doctor prescribes (even if you feel better before you finish them). If you do not do so, the infection WILL get worse, travel to your kidneys, and cause permanent kidney damage. I would rather take the antibiotics and get rid of the infection than deal with the consequences of ignoring the problem. Misuse of antibiotics is a problem, but they are NECESSARY to properly treat a UTI. Cranberry juice and water may help prevent UTI in the future, but they will not cure an existing infection.

(It is also important to find out if your symptoms are being caused by something other than a UTI. Your symptoms need to be diagnosed and treated.)Health Question & Answer
