How long before Bactrim DS works?!
Question: How long before Bactrim DS works.?
This morning I went to the er. I have infected teeth and I was prescribed Bactrim DS. I was wondering How long does it take for the Bactrim to start working because my right side of my face is completely swollen. :( When should the swelling be going down.? and what else can I do to bring it down.? I am also taking motrin 800. It doesn't seem to be working :(Health Question & Answer

It takes an estimated 72 hours to achieve a "theraputic" blood level of the antibiotic and it begins to kill the infection. Applying ice packs intermittently might make you more comfortable; taking the motrin on a regular basis is pretty much all you can do until the antibiotic kicks in and starts to work.Health Question & Answer
For an infection like this - it's pretty deep, so it might take a couple of days before there is noticeable improvement, and a few more days after that for the swelling to completely disappear, if the antibiotics are working. If you don't see any signs of improvement after 5-6 days, you should call the doc - some other treatment approach might be needed. Motrin is unlikely to do much for this type of swelling.Health Question & Answer
