What causes a person to binge?!

Question: What causes a person to binge.?
Why would someone who never binged before, suddenly start at age 40.? It's only at night. Why can't I get control over the situation. It just doesn't make any sense to me. It seems so easy to control but it's not. What's happening to me.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
What causes a person to binge.? Here are some answers but they may or may not refer to you.?
Emotional trauma - the biggies obviously like bereavement, divorce, losing job, empty nest, changing jobs, moving house etc but also smaller upsets can set it off: a change in relationships, promotion, growing older. Mind and body are incredibly interwoven. And it needn't be some big sudden shock - you might just have been getting more miserable and now your body has had enough and is protesting.
Change in lifestyle; this may be partly emotional but can be physical for example if you work shifts and the pattern has changed; if you are eating at different times in the day e.g you used to eat your main meal in the evening and now eat at lunchtime.
Illness or medication: these can effect appetite control so you feel hungry even when you're not (I took steroids for a while and frequently felt ravenous even though I'd eaten a big dinner).
Whatever the cause it is an illness and you need professional help. Start with your doctor is she/he is sympathetic or get onto to one of the helplines. There are plenty of people out there with help. I do know what it like I binged for several years before getting it under control. It wasn't easy and it wasn't quick but we (my therapist and I) managed it eventually.
