Dental Enthusiasts: Will there be any problems if I get braces over my amalgam fillings?!
Question: Dental Enthusiasts: Will there be any problems if I get braces over my amalgam fillings.?
I have a few and can just imagine the braces moving the filling and getting a toxic spill of mercury.. What is the likelyhood of any mercury vapor or liquid being released because of the braces.?

Answers:
Mercury vapours aren't really likely to be released in this way - the material has set and the vapours have mostly gone, there's no way the mercury could spill either..
There could be other problems if the fillings are large or the tooth is root-treated, cracks or fractures could happen if the tooth has been weakened.. Your orthodontist will be able to tell you if this is the case and if you're able to get braces in your case - but the most likely answer is yes..

Don't worry about a thing.. I have had those types of fillings for over 20 years, with my braces as a teenager, and I'm fine..Health Question & Answer
