Ive had a few root canals done in the past and they do not hurt!! They numb you completely.. The only thing that hurts a little is the shots they have to give your to numb the pain.. The needle looks pretty scary and intimidating.. I remember getting at least 3-4 shots each time i had to get a root canal.. They have to go deep into the gum and numb the nerve.. Then they put a timer on to make sure the numbing works before they do anything.. They will test the tooth to make sure you dont feel anything.. Its very scary I admit but i'll tell you its a heck of a lot better than not getting it done and going through a toothache from infection.. Thats what i have right now and the pain is so excruciating i cant eat, sleep, or talk right.. I cant wait to get my root canal done tomorrow.. Im scared b/c i have an infection going on so i dont even know if they will be able to numb me really good.. I dont care at this point b/c my pain is so bad that i feel like yanking the tooth right out of my mouth..

Its so worth getting a root canal!! Im glad you are going to an endodontist b/c this is their speciality.. They use microscopes to look into the canals and make sure the roots are killed and there is no more infection or the canal is clean.. Plus they use smaller drills.. They are more expensive than a dentist but this is their speciality..

also, after the root canal is done you will eventually get a permanent cap and your tooth looks beautiful if its near the front.. If its near the back, get a gold tooth b/c noone can see it and lasts much longer..

I didnt take care of my teeth as a child.. Now im 41 and getting all this dental work done..

good luck to youHealth Question & Answer

Don't worry about it at all! Like you I had never had a root canal before and was so scared the night before and when it was done I was wondering why root canals get such a painful reputation! I personally think fillings hurt far more! I had mine done at an endodontist (root canal specialist) and they completely numb you and basically clean the inside of your tooth so there is no more infection that can get into your gums and cause an abcess.. I couldn't tell they were doing anything......there was some light drilling like when you have a tooth filled and I little bit of pressure and vibrations but absolutely no pain at all.. When the novacaine wears off there is a slight bruised feeling while chewing on this tooth but they recommended that I not chew so much especially crunchy things for a couple days on that side.. They also recommend that you have a crown placed on this tooth as soon as possible to protect it from cracking or crumbling because it is not as structurally sound after a root canal until it is capped.. I just had my tooth capped about a month ago and have had no pain at all anymore with this tooth which is such a relief! I think it's even easier to chew than before! Hope this helps you out and don't worry at all! (and I'm one of the biggest worry warts around :-) Take CareHealth Question & Answer

Root canals have a bad reputation because they are the treatment practiced to resolve tooth aches.. The root canal procedure is associated with that pain though they are designed to end pain..

Sometimes when there is a lot of infection present the anesthetic doesn't work as well because the infection blocks the numbing effect.. However, 99% of the time anesthesia is profoundly acheived and root canal treatment is as painless as any other procedure..

If you are really worried request Nitrous Oxide before the dentist begins treatment.. This will help you through the anxiety that makes dental treatment more uncomfortable than it has to be..

If you feel anything after the dentist numbs you just let him/her know and he/she will more than gladly give you more anethetic......dentists do not like to cause pain and will try to keep their patients as comfortable as possible..

Root canal treatment is very common and is painless for most patients.. I have assisted thousands of root canals and 99..9% of the time the patient doesn't feel a thing..

Hope this helps
