and we humans do.? evolution.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Animals will get cavities if you give them enough refined carbohydrates, similiar to why we get cavities.. Dogs have a lot of saliva and the saliva is full of protective enzymes.. The more saliva one produces the more protective enzymes help to decrease the solubility of the enamel or the rate at which acids break down your tooth.. Cavities form because bacteria can get into the tooth and the sugars you eat give the little buggars food to stay alive.. If you give a dog or animal a lot of acidic foods and sugary foods they will get the same amount of decay as humans do..Health Question & Answer

Animals do get cavities, but they rarely looked for because animals have to be anesthetized for a careful dental exam since they won't hold still and tend to bite.. My dog had an abscessed tooth a few years ago that had to be extracted..

also, I have seen 2 news reports lately where zoo tigers had to have dental work---one was several filings and the other a root canal..Health Question & Answer
