use denture cleaner.. they just sit in there and soak clean.. gets rid of bacteria (what's causing the smell) and cleans the surface of any gunk.. any denture cleaner will do.. you can get it at any drugstore, grocery store, or wal mart or target.. don't brush them!! they are not like teeth- they are made of a very hard plastic and not meant to be brushed.. the cleaner will take care of it.. and also do not soak, or place them anywhere near hot surfaces, hot water, steam- even steam from the shower.. they will melt if it gets hot enough..Health Question & Answer

i buy polident (or any denture cleaner) and soak them in it for a few hours when im not wearing them jsut to get them really clean (i only wear them at night) but you could read the instructions for how long is good enough
also, when you soak them use ONLY COLD WATER......do not use hot or even warm water..
when i wore my retainers full time (yes, i also have the clear ones) after i brushed my teeth before bed, i would use a very gentle toothbrush with just alittle bit of tooth paste and i would carefully brush them, jsut to make sure theyre getting cleaned on daily basis, b/c they are like teeth..
make sure that once ina while you also wash your retainer case, cause that can smell pretty funny too! for this, i simply soak the whole thing in a bowl with polident

oh yeah, in the drugstore i think polident also make a "special" type just for retainers........but dont even bother with that, ive tried it and its no different or better than regular denture cleaner
i, and my ortho havent seen or noticed anything at all wrong with my retainers..Health Question & Answer

They actually make a tablet, Efferdent, which cleans dentures and retainers.. You just drop the tablet in warm water with your retainers and it fizzes and cleans them in 15 minutes.. It has Listerine with it so it kills bacteria.. I got mine at Walmart for $2..36 for 36 tablets..Health Question & Answer

YES , BE VERY CAREFFUL THEY ARE CRAZLY EXPENSIVE TO GET THEM AGAIN..
See this is what is normally done to soak them in Listerine for a while and wash them out.. or if you perfer to spend more money they are some product that are sale in the drugstore over the counter;like: sparkle dent, ortho clean..efferdent
they are the best in the market and aren't so expensive..

hope I'd helped you!!
good luck!!Health Question & Answer
