Hi,

The stinging sensation is because the bleaching agent penetrated the tubular openings of the dentin.. As a result the nerves inside the teeth suffered transient insult.. Those have swollen up a little bit and are now sensitive to the slightest temperature changes.. Even opening your mouth to talk can be difficult..

So, this is what you should do :

1.. Take Advil / Ibuprofen / Motrin (with a proper meal).. You can take upto 800mg at a time every 6- 8 hours if needed for the initial 2/3 days.. This will obviously mask the pain, but at the same time will resuce the swelling.. After 2 days or so, you should feel much better.. This will be your quickest solution..

2.. Tylenol usually only masks the pain.. It does not reduce the swelling.. Therefore, the healing period will be longer..

3.. You can also use Sensodyne or any other toothpaste for sensitivity (e..g.., the one by Colgate, etc..).. However, it will take longer for the symptoms to go away..

4.. Do not eat anything very hot or cold, of course !

5.. also, DO NOT use any chemical agents like aspirin, clove oil or Anbesol.. You may feel that the pain is going down, but the pulp (nerves of the teeth) may sustain permanent damage..

Remember, the nerves are already exposed to the environment, further insult may cause necrosis (death) of those nerves..

In that case you will end up needing multiple root canal treatments down the road..

Hope this helped.. Good luck !!Health Question & Answer
