When you first visit the orthodontist they will take molds or impressions of your teeth.. This is really gross because it feels like the mold is sliding down your throat and you feel like you want to gag..
After he has talked to you and your family about what will need to be done to fix your teeth you will then be scheduled to come back..
Most people have to get these blue rubber bands called doughnuts.. They place them in between your back teeth.. These can cause a lot of pain because your teeth are moving to make room for them..
You wear these about 2-4 weeks depending on your mouth..
When you go back they will then remove them and put these metal circles around the back teeth.. These are to hold in the wires that will come with the brackets..
You again wear these for about the same time..
Once you go back to the Ortho.. you will them get brackets placed on your teeth.. They usually apply these with some special cement adhesive.. Once the brackets have been applied, next comes the wires and the rubber bands.. The wires are used to move your teeth to the desired direction.. The rubber bands (colored things on the brackets) are used to aide as some sort of comfort so you don't have the brackets tearing into your mouth..
You usually wear your braces for about two months or so and then the doctor may recommend you to wear rubber bands.. These are attached to the bracket and the metal bands in the back of your mouth.. Most people have to get these in order to correct an overbite.. Other procedures are often required depending on the corrections that are needed for your mouth.. also the length you wear them depend strictly on how bad your teeth are to start out with and also how dedicated you are at getting them off.. If you brush your teeth like you are supposed to and wear your devices the way you are supposed to then your time in braces will be cut down.. But if you are lazy and don't care you can be in braces for the rest of your life.. Remember the doctor is getting paid either way so you can or can't do what you are supposed to do.. they put glue on a tooth and stick a bracket one by one.. then they dry it with this machine thingy.. then they measure out a wire usually at a later date and stick it in there.. you'll feel tightness.. but overall no pain really.. it's long and annoying to have this mouth spacer thing to keep your jaw wide open.. that kinda hurts after a while.. don't worry it's no big deal..Health Question & Answer
