I had to have surgery on my jaw to correct my TMJ.. Mine was really bad though.. My mouth would get stuck opened or closed sometimes.. It came to a head when I went to the dentist for a check-up and my jaw literally came unhinged.. I was rushed to the Hospital and have to have my jaw broke and wired shut for six weeks........it was not fun..

I have always been told not to chew gum or yawn without using my hand under my jaw to assist me.. Do not purposely open your mouth wide just to see if it will pop........you are doing damage to your cartiledge when you do that..

Keep wearing your night guard........it does keep you from gritting your teeth, and causing more damage..Health Question & Answer

To be honest I'm not really sure, but I think that TMJ disorder is permanent.. (We all have a TMJ- it's short for Temporomandibular joint.. Your mandible is your part of your jaw.. When they say you have TMJ, it means you have TMJ disorder (popping of the TMJ) You can do things to ease the pain and popping, but once you have it you always will (like I said, not 100% on that!) My dad has it, but it never really went away.. Just keep doing what the physical therapist said, and even though it may take a while, I'm sure it will help you a little bit! If problem persists, go back and tell them this regimen isn't working well and they could maybe try something else to help you..
Well good luck, hope you feel better!Health Question & Answer
