Confusing tooth discomfort. Stopped after use of medication. Started a couple days later. Root Canal?!

Question: Confusing tooth discomfort.. Stopped after use of medication.. Started a couple days later.. Root Canal.?
My #13 tooth hurt at nights for about a week (#13 is back top right molar)
I went to the dentist (turns out there was a cavity) but after he filled it.. It hurt much much more, and much more consistant..
He thought it might be a root canal, but couldnt see anything on X-rays.. He prescribed tylenol w/ codeine and suggested an endodentist (root canal proffesional) to take another look..
After taking the medicine ONCE it went away for 48 hours
Now it's back to hurting at night..
Could this heal after more use of medication.?
I'd like to avoid seeing the endodentist if possible to save cash..Health Question & Answer

Answers:
sounds like the nerve is inflamed due to the depth of the original decay or the depth of the filling.. Sedative restoration may calm tooth, but root canal or extraction may be necessary.. If the nerve starts to go, there aren't any good home remedies and tylenol #3 won't help anymore.. If the tooth really starts to go down hill, have your dentist "open" the tooth, even if he wont do the entire root canal.. It'll save you from wanting to shoot yourself in the foot at 2 a..m.. to relieve the pain in your tooth.. for more, see your next question's answerHealth Question & Answer

I had the same problem with a different tooth.. Have your dentist make sure there is not a leak in the filling..Health Question & Answer
