Wisdom teeth extracted...should I be wearing my retainer?!

Question: Wisdom teeth extracted......should I be wearing my retainer.?
I had my wisdom teeth extracted last Thursday, and I haven't really been able to wear my retainers since.. I was worried that my teeth shifted a lot so I tried on my retainers last night and they still fit on, but it was really tight and painful to wear, so I just took them off.. I also didn't want to wear them because on the top, my retainers go all the way back (I have the clear ones that cap over my teeth) and they are very close to and somewhat touching my stitches.. I don't want it to interfere with my stitches.. So, should I be wearing my retainers again now.? Health Question & Answer

To answer your question, I would recommend to wear your retainer.. It may hurt as first, but later on you can get used to it.. It just takes time.. and If the retainer goes all the way back and it bothers you ( I wear a retainer too for 8 months now) keep in mind that you can always take it out when you eat.. Wearing the retainer as I believe you already knows keep the teeth in place so that it won't move, you definitely don't want all your dentist's hard work and all the pain you went through go for nothing.. Although this should've been the first question to ask the dentist or oral surgeon before or even after you had your wisdom teeth removed, I believe that you should be ok during the healing process to NOT wear your retainer.. Your teeth probably won't shift toooo much during this short period of time during healing.. If the retainer is too painful to wear right now, then simply don't wear it.. But you should perhaps plan to see your orthodontis in the very near future to have a new retainer fitted for your mouth to allow a proper fitting for "less teeth" if you'd like to keep your teeth that you worked so hard for to have straight, remain straight.. The discomfort is probably because your retainer no longer fits properly and the simple fact that you just had surgery.. No matter how minor it seems; it's still surgery..Health Question & Answer

i had my wisdom teeth out 3 weeks ago too.. My oral surgeon i could put them in 3 days after my surgery, but my teeth shifted really bad because i didn't eat at all.. And i didn't have stitches.. Just wear it at night.. You should be fine!!!!Health Question & Answer

Call your orthodontist and tell them everything you wrote here.. I don't think any of the answers posted so far are satisfactory..Health Question & Answer
