everybody says that they hurt a lot and that u cannot eat anything but no one mentions if they also hurt when u aren't doing anything..

I am a HUGE BABY when it comes to mouth pain...... I have had kidney stones and gone through labor, and I would prefer BOTH to mouth pain of any kind! LOL
BUT- Mine hurt for the first 2 weeks I had them on, and for about 2-3 days after I would have them tightened.. Otherwise, you get used to them..
Eating doesn't always hurt...... it depends on what you eat...... apples are pretty much out unless you cut them into chunks, along with anything you have to chew a lot or bite hard (like caramel and fruit-roll-ups, steak, jaw-breakers, nuts, etc).. If you break your food into little pieces it works better and doesn't hurt as much..
I've played clarinet and bari sax for nearly 20 years (I now play professionally), and I had braces for 4..5 of those years...... it didn't even hurt to play unless I had just gotten them tightened..
Don't panic...... you get used to them! They will most likely just be uncomfortable for the first few weeks, but you get used to it pretty quick.. After the initial shock of having them put on, the pain is easily managed with a couple Advil..

Once you get them on they will hurt for a couple days (regardless if you eat or not)..
But after that you'll forget they are even there..
Every time you go in to get them tightened they will hurt for a couple days again (again - regardless what you do or don't do with your mouth)..
Its not a horrible pain though.. Just a rather uncomfortable, tight feeling..

I have had braces for four months.. They do not hurt when they are putting them on.. Just a couple days after where your teeth are moving.. They feel funny at first but after words you don't even notice them..I hope this helps.. Good Luck!Health Question & Answer
