I just read an article yesterday saying that hygienist are in high demand and will continue to be through 2013 with the average salary being $50-60,000 with the highest pay being in the 90's! Health Question & Answer
Hygienists are always needed. The dentist can't work on every patient in the office at once. also, a professional cleaning is much more thorough than the average home tooth brushing!
There isn't more demand for cosmetic dentistry per se, however there is usually more money in it. They still need hygienists too! "Cosmetic" dentists are just regular dentists with a specialization in cosmetic restorations, anyway.Health Question & Answer

That is so not true. I am in a dental hygiene class and my mom is a Dental Hygienist, and no matter where you go you can find someone who needs something done to their teeth. Hygienists' don't just clean your teeth either. They can actually run X-rays and make molds for teeth guards and retainers etc.

As a dental hygienist, what I see has happened is more dental hygienists are graduating than dentists. That means less job opportunities for dental hygienists. Until more dental offices open the competition for one job opening is going to be high. I interviewed for a job recently and was told more than 100 dental hygienists had also applied for one opening.
