I just had 18 dental xrays during my check up - is this bad?!
Question: I just had 18 dental xrays during my check up - is this bad.?
They said they were doing a full mouth xray - 18 xrays at various points in my mouth. I'm worried that this is too much exposure =( anyone know if this is ok .?Health Question & Answer

18 is the standard full mouth series...sometimes a panographic x-ray as well. Did the person taking the x-rays use a lead apron (it goes across your chest and lap and is heavy).? Usually you won't be over-exposed, as the low dose radiation used for dental x-rays is minimal, and you won't have to be x-rayed again for a while. Usually the 18 FMX is only done upon intital appointment and will not be done again for a long while.Health Question & Answer
It's called a full mouth series, and it's normal - most plans and providers allow it once every two years. In the interim they just take bite wings or problem areas.
The x-ray dosage is minimal and generally accepted as safe, unless you're pregnant or otherwise at risk - and they should have asked you first.Health Question & Answer

Its normal full mouth xrays are 18. So don't worry as long as you don't get more xrays done with another dentist then you will be exposed. X-rays should be done every 6 months! ;)Health Question & Answer
