Question: One of the main reasons people dont go to the dentist is financial. So why cant we have affordable care for all.?
Since one of the main reasons people don't go to the dentist is the high cost of treatment. Why can't this country have affordable dental care for all.? I realize the dentist go to school for a long time. Spend a lot of money on their education, and must have a great deal of knowledge and patience to do their job. I also believe they should be paid well for their services. But in these very hard economic times, sometimes the things we eliminate are what we can put off, and that's our health care. I also realize we can't seem to get adequate health care for everyone either, but why are other countries able to do this and we can't.? Prevention is so much easier to manage, then once the damage is done. Health Question & Answer

You have hit upon a question that has multiple answers, and some of the answers above touch on part of the problem as well.

The high cost of schooling, and hence the doctor or dentists need to pay back the cost of that schooling is one part of it. Another is the great power wielded by certain political entities, such as the drug companies and AMA that keep drug cost artificially high.

While politicians talk about universal health care, it will probably not happen in this country, and for one of the reasons stated above... As a society, we have placed too much importance on the individual as opposed to the needs of the country as a whole.

There is a division in this country between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots'. Universal healthcare cuts that divide by making everyone equal. Those that have the means to seek private healthcare do no want to be equal, they are better. They can afford to be better.

By that same token, doctors do not want universal healthcare as it limits what they can make. They would be paid like any government employee, whereas if they are in private practice, they can charge whatever the patient is willing to pay.

This holds true for many facets of American life, from medical care to buying a new car. Why should a doctor or lawyer drive a Honda with good gas mileage when they can afford a Mercedes status symbol and the higher fuel costs that come with it....?

As Americans we have placed too high a value on status, and not enough on quality and reliability. Just one of the many reasons why this country is finding itself in the financial straights it is currently in.Health Question & Answer

Because we don't seem to care about things that benefit the country in the long run. We only care about whether the government seems to be taking more money out of our pockets right now. It's a mindset that puts the individual over the country
