I went to the dentist today and had a cleaning for very heavy calculus on my teeth. I have never felt anything like this type of cleaning before. It was with a very high pitched instrument, and the pain was excruciating on my gums. It felt like my gums were being drilled into. I could not believe that I was experiencing this kind of pain with a dental visit. I am wondering: Should I have been given some kind of anesthesia.? Why was it not offered.? Is this kind of extreme pain normal with this kind of cleaning.? Why was it so painful.? Thank you for helping me to better understand.Health Question & Answer

Actually it means they have done a thorough job. A good hygienist will get right into the gum to remove calculus, you may also have had quite a lot of bleeding which is a sign of all the bacterial activity in your gums due to the calculus. Take a mild pain killer. You may be sore for a few days, and may bleed when you brush, but dont worry, you have to get all the bacteria out of there, or you will eventually lose the teeth. Gum disease is also known to cause heart disease, so be glad they have done it well. Lots of dentists do not. I used to be a Dental Nurse, and the surgery I worked in did not offer any pain relief, but you can ask, however it would require several shots to numb your whole mouth, and many dentists do not like to do this.Health Question & Answer
I have heard of this kind of cleaning before. Its normal..I have had something like this where they scrapped my gums and they started bleeding. Give it a couple of days and you'll feel betterHealth Question & Answer
