Huh... why do I have two retainers?!

Question: Huh... why do I have two retainers.?
Hey hey. =]

I had braces put on my teeth when I was 13 and they were taken off when I was 15. (And I'm 16 now.)

When the braces were taken off my dentist glued a metal-retainer on the back of my teeth. In addition he gave me a clear plastic retainer in the shape of my teeth to wear at night.

A few nights ago, my friends and I were talking about braces. When we were talking about retainers, none of them had metal retainers on the back of their teeth. They only had to wear the plastic ones at night.

So uh... What gives.? Why do I have two retainers.? I really don't want these metal-retainers. I feel uncomfortable in them when I kiss my boyfriend. And the texture of the glue isn't very pleasant, either.

I'd ask my dentist about it but my parents told me to ask on my next dentist appointment. In January. :/

So uh, yeah. Thanks if you reply!Health Question & Answer

They're bonded retainers. they are meant to be there, because that gives your teeth little or no chance of moving back to their original positions. it's actually better, in a way because if you just had removable retainers, you might choose not to wear it, and your teeth might be crooked again. But, the bad thing about bonded retainers is that you have an increased risk of having plaque build up and tartar if you don't take care of your teeth back there. So, you should definitely ask your dentist about it, maybe you can have it removed, and just wear the removable plastic one. Hope this helped.Health Question & Answer
