What could cause sudden sensitivity in a tooth?!

Question: What could cause sudden sensitivity in a tooth.?
Tonight I was at my friend's party and I was drinking cold pepsi. Out of no where I took a sip and I got the worst feeling in one of my teeth. (Upper right side, alll the way in the back)
I figured maybe it was just cold and bothering my tooth.
I'm home now, and my tooth feels achy.
I took a sip of room temperature water and it hurts just as much. It feels like I'm holding an ice cube against my tooth or something.
Its just really sensitive.
I've never had a cavity or any other dental problems.
Should I wait to see if this sensitivity/pain goes away.?

Answers:
This could have a number of causes, including a cracked tooth, receding gums or just plain old sensitivity. If it doesn't clear up over the weekend, have your dentist take a look.
