Dental x-ray during pregnancy?!

Question: Dental x-ray during pregnancy.?
I had to have a root canal done while 14 weeks pregnant (am now 33 weeks) and I'm concerned because I had two x-rays on my mouth (just on the one tooth) without a lead vest on. Has anyone had x-rays during their pregnancy.? Or a dental x-ray without a vest.? My 19 week scan said the baby is very healthy, although if something were wrong, i.e. eyesight/hearing, they wouldn't be able to tell. Am I worrying too much.?.?Health Question & Answer

Dental x-rays have improved a lot from past years, and the techniques and equipment used now produce very little scatter radiation. This means that for a routine x-ray for a root canal, there should be virtually no effect on the rest of your body. For this reason, lead vests are rarely used for dental x-rays in the UK. also, it seems that the situation was unavoidable for you since you need accurate x-rays for root canal treatment anyway.

If you are worried though, then maybe make an appointment with your doctor or dentist to discuss the situation with them - they should be able to reassure you!Health Question & Answer

If you had a digital X-ray they are about 90% less radiation than a normal film X-ray. Both are still minimum radiation. You probably get more radiation by standing in front of the microwave. Either way the dentist should make you wear a vest. Every X-ray we take on a pregnant woman we make them wear a vest on the front and the back. Your first trimester is the most important for avoiding things. That is when the baby is first developing. I am curious why they didn't call your OB doctor and ask if there were any restrictions for you during your pregnancy. I am sure there were no harm done. But it bothers me that they didn't take more precaution with you. Congratulations I hope everything goes great for you.Health Question & Answer
