Question: During my 7 year old sons last dental visit, I asked if she thought he might need braces and she said it was .?
to early to tell. Today, I was reading an article written by a local orthodontist in the paper today and she is saying this..."According to the American Association of Orthodontics, children should be evaluated by an orthodontist no later than the age of 7." Has anyone had their child seen by an orthodontist at such an early age.? If so, what did they do for your child to give preventive care.?Health Question & Answer

If your dentist has examined your son and there are no signs of imminent dental problems, then there is no need for further steps. For example, at the age of 7 - having gaps between the baby teeth is good, having slight crowding of the lower front adult teeth is normal. For most kids this is what we normally see, and we would allow all adult teeth to erupt before assessing for simple crowding problems, usually age 12+.
However, at this age some signs that might require further orthodontic examination are:
1. Front baby teeth with no gaps or even crowding;
2. Deep overjet - top front teeth stick out much farther than bottom front teeth;
3. Deep overbite - Top front teeth cover up bottom front teeth completely when mouth is closed;
3. Crossbites - top teeth inside bottom teeth when mouth closed.
These all indicate not problems with the teeth, but with the shape and size of the jaws. Therefore treatment may be started with removable appliances (palatal expander, Twin-Block, ...) to help correct at this earlier stage.Health Question & Answer

My daughter was referred to an orthodontist at age 12 and that was certainly not too late. She had a procedure done that expanded her upper pallet so that all her teeth would fit in. Now at age 13 the orthodontist is waiting for some baby teeth to fall out before he puts the real braces on.Health Question & Answer
