Tooth extracted 6 days ago.. having some trouble.?!

Question: Tooth extracted 6 days ago.. having some trouble..?
so, I had my tooth pulled about 6 days ago. it was cracked really bad and I developed infection and hurt EXTREMELY bad. once I had it pulled, it was sore, of course, but it felt much better immediately and I was taking the ibuprofen 600mg for pain as needed (which I only really needed the first 2 days) Now, the other night, I woke up in the middle of the night in excruciating pain. I tried the ibuprofen for the first day, DID NOT help at all. so I went to the ER until I can get to the dentist. they gave me a prescription for ibuprofen, but stronger. I TOLD them it would not work, but they wouldn't give me anything else, except 4 percocet 5mg to take home for the night (and also antibiotics) those worked, now they're gone, back to being in pain. I don't think I have a dry socket, I don't see any bone and I'm pretty sure a clot didn't fall out, but it hurts BADLY, and I'm not responding to the motrin. I think it may just be an infection. I'm going to the dentist tomorrow. do you think they'll give me something for the pain that will actually WORK.? I have a big concert I'm going to on Tuesday I've been looking forward to for months and I REALLY don't want to have to be crying in pain and not enjoy myself!Health Question & Answer

It does sound to me like you do have a dry socket. Usually after a tooth is pulled an infection will not cause the pain like you are experiencing. Especially when you have been on antibiotics. When you have a dry socket you do not necessarily see the bone. A clot could have come out and you not even known it. Clots come out through sucking motions like drinking through a straw or smoking. Another way is by spitting. Spitting has a pulling/sucking action that will remove a clot. also sometimes a clot will just not form. That is not unusual at all.

I suggest you use warm salt water rinses and take Advil. You can take up to 4 200mg Advil at a time for a total of 800mg. The warm salt water will speed up the healing process and hopefully you will notice some relief quickly. But when you rinse do not SWISH. Put the liquid in your mouth and tilt your head from side to side and then just lean over the sink and let it flow out of your mouth without spitting. You can do this every couple of hours. If you spit the liquid out then you are once again doing the pulling action and any healing you may have started will be a mute point. Get to the dentist as soon as possible and if it does turn out to be a dry socket then he has some special medicine made of oil of clove and some special gauze that he can pack down in the socket and you should feel instant relief. You may have to go back for more than one treatment. But it will be well worth it to be able to get rid of the pain. Best wishes and I hope this gets resolved soon. I have been there and done that whole dry socket thing and I know it is no fun at all.

well you are going to be seeing tour dental team before going to you concert. They will flush out the area, see if you have an exposed nerve, repack the area if necessary and give you the appropriate pain medications. You need to be firm with them about wanting the pain meds without appearing like a junkie looking to get high, and if you amplify the amount of pain you are into the stratosphere of disbelief IE: "Doc you gotta help me., feels like a mac truck ran over my molars . I need some oxy contin fast" They will push you out the door with the Motrin Talk with them ..explain whats happening and they will help. I don't want to write a play book here for kids to get pain meds they don't need. The anti biotic should clear up the yuck that's causing the pain. your dental team should give you a handfull and and maybe another round of a cillin of some soet..dont know which one they prescribed

You have to see your dentist again. It sounds like you have a dry socket. He will have to clean out the socket, and place a dry socket paste(this has eugenol-a clove oil medication that soothes the pain). You may need 2 or 3 treatments. If that doesn't help, then he will have to currette the socket to get a new blood clot and start the healing process again. What happens with a dry socket, is the blood clot does not form due to rinsing, drinking carbonated drinks, smoking or your body chemistry. And that leaves an open socket, where food gets in and starts an infection.Health Question & Answer
