Dentist said i need aroot canal BUT...?!

Question: Dentist said i need aroot canal BUT....?
the tooth he is talking about dosent even hurt its been a year since he said that its the other side of my mouth that is in severe pain .... I heard that if you dont have a root canal it could spread to your brain .. is this true.? Health Question & Answer

Answers:
1. It may not hurt because the nerve is dead, you have a chronic low grade infection and NOT a full blown abscess.

2. You have to take a look at the x-ray. Either there is decay extending into the nerve or there is an evidence of infection (a radiolucent area / black hole kind of appearance) at the root apex.

3. If you are not sure and have doubts about your dentist, go and seek a 2nd opinion. You have that right.

4. Yes, a dental abscess can spread to your heart, brain, and kidneys. Health Question & Answer

Just like the others said, it's common for a nonvital (dead) tooth to not hurt anymore. However, if it's left like that, that dead and necrotic pulp inside the tooth can cause a potentially life-threatening infection eventually.

However, you also have every right to be educated about your own mouth. Go to the dentist and ask (politely, so it doesn't seem like you're trying to get him/her to prove anything) if you can just have a bit more detailed explanation of exactly what's wrong, and if it can be explained on the xrays. You'll know exactly what evidence there is that the tooth has died and why the root canal is needed.

At least since it's already dead, there likely won't be much pain after it's finished. And it'll likely never bother you again! Just ask if you want to know what a root canal is like.Health Question & Answer

Yes it's true. I have been a dental assistant for 28 years. The tooth doesn't always have to hurt to need a root canal. If the tooth is "dead" meaning non-vital, you won't have pain but the infection is still there. If it is not treated, any infection in the mouth be it tooth, gums, jaw, can and will keep spreading if not treated. It may take longer for some people, but it will happen. Any infection in your head is serious and shouldn't go untreated. If you don't want root canal, have the tooth extracted (should be last resort). I know of someone who had to have part of jaw removed because they didn't want to go to dentist and waited too long. Infections will spread in any part of body if not taken care of. Don't fool around with infections in the head area!Health Question & Answer

If you're not sure, go to another dentist for a 2nd opinion. Ask friends or co-workers for a recommendation for a dentist to see.
