I need a dentist with the facts!?!

Question: I need a dentist with the facts!.?
I read something in a book and need it verified immediately. What I read goes something along the lines of... "a good brushing with water will get your teeth just as clean as a good brushing with toothpaste." Is this true.? And if so, how is this possible!.?! Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Toothpaste doesn't contain any actual cleaning agents, only emulsifiers, detergent to make it foam, flavourings, colour, etc. Just about the only thing of benefit in there is fluoride, which doesn't clean teeth, only promotes the remineralization of your enamel.

Notice how on every toothpaste tube it has a little asterisk after the product claim saying "*with regular brushing." It's the physical mechanics of removing plaque and bacterial film with the toothbrush that does almost all of the good, not unlike how the friction of hand-washing removes more dirt and bacteria than hand soap ever would.

That's why you can't just wipe toothpaste on with your fingertip and then go to bed with a minty mouthful of germs.Health Question & Answer

It is true. Toothpaste has very little therapeutic effects. It does taste good and makes your breath feel fresh so toothpaste isn't bad, but water is just as good for plaque removal.

You have to think of plaque like a sticky film all over your teeth. To remove it, all you need to do is scrub it off with a toothbrush, and using a little bit of water on a toothbrush will do it. The toothpaste doesn't really help scrub off the plaque. Hope this helps you understand.

Health Question & Answer

Basically, that is true but it does not take into account the substances in the paste that are good for your teeth, including fluoride, xylitol, some pastes have natural enzymes that occur in the saliva also.Health Question & Answer
