Has anyone ever swallowed their tongue after being anesthetized?!

Question: Has anyone ever swallowed their tongue after being anesthetized.?
Just had a cavity filled and had 2 shots.
Im getting the distinct feeling that I could swallow my tongue if I really tried.

Is this possible.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Though it is true that your tongue is anchored with muscles to your mandible, when you get anesthetized in the bottom, you are left with no control over the tongue.

Your tongue can fall back and block your airway (You don't swallow it altogether).

It is rare but theoretically, it CAN happen.

That is why you need to take couple of precautions:

1. After getting worked on bottom teeth, wait until the numbness goes away before you go to bed.

2. It is better to get work done only on one side at a time.

Bilateral mandibular injections pose more risk.Health Question & Answer

It is possible only if the tissue that attaches the tongue to the floor of the mouth (the lingual frenum) has been severed or is congenitally missing (missing since birth). Even if the lingual frenum is absent the tongue is anchored to the floor of the mouth and the back of the mouth by muscle. Blocking the airway when people are under general anesthesia (knocked out) is a concern and that is one reason why they place a tube down the throat (intubation) as well as muscles of respiration may become suppressed or paralyzed, but this is only when you are completely knocked out. Dental injections will not cause this even though it might feel like it could happen.Health Question & Answer

no. your tongue is firmly anchored to the bottom of your mouth. however, if you become unconscious and are laying on your back, the muscles that control your tongue will relax and the tongue can fall back, possibly blocking your airway.Health Question & Answer

No. Your tongue is part of your mouth and is hooked on. Go ahead and take a look.Health Question & Answer
