Question: To be a Dental Hygienist, do you need to go to college or just attend the two year program at an institute.? .?
and if you need to go to college, what should you major in. Health Question & Answer

Answers:
To get into a dental hygiene program you need to take science and general education prerequisite classes at a college level. This generally includes (but is not limited to):

1. Anatomy
2. Physiology
3. Chemistry (Intro)
4. Microbiology
5. Psych
6. Sociology
7. Speech
8. English
9. College level math

Completing these prerequisites along with other general ed. requirements for an A.A. degree will make you eligble for a dental hygiene program that awards an A.A. in dental hygiene and that will allow you to sit for your boards.

If you are interested in a B.S. in dental hygiene you must take all these classes along with general education classes that will transfer you at the junior level. In addition they may also require (but again are not limited to):

1. Statistics
2. Organic Chemistry
3. General Chemistry
4. Cell/Molecular Biology

Once in a program, whether it be at a community college or university, the hygiene program is usually 2 years long. You either obtain your A.A. or B.S. in it and then take your boards. As of now, there are no entry level hygiene Masters program only degree extension programs.

My suggestion is to major in pre-dental hygiene or allied health sciences. Visit ADHA.org to find more info and check out specific schools you are interested in. Best Wishes!Health Question & Answer

You have to attend college. It doesn't necessarily have to be a University, it can be a community college. But there are prerequisites required in order to do the program itself, which is a two year program. The prerequisites usually take a year or two.
You major in dental hygiene. Though you will initially go for pre-dental hygiene.Health Question & Answer
