How do you quit biting your cheeks? ?!


Question: How do you quit biting your cheeks.? .?
This is a really bad habit of mine. Ever since I was little I've had a habit of biting my cheeks and my lips. My dentist said I should stop, but he also said realistically I might not ever be able to stop.

I would think it's harder to quit than smoking. If I was addicted to smoking I would just try to distance myself from the cigarettes (not buy cigarettes). But I can't exactly distance my teeth from my cheeks. (Unless I did something like mouth-off to my kung fu teacher, but I'd prefer to keep my teeth)

Anyway, do you have any idea how I can break this habit.? Has anyone ever successfully broken the habit of chewing their cheeks.? Health Question & Answer

Damm I hate to do it too but I mostly do it when Im nervous or stressed out. I chew a lot of gum but bite my lips as soon as Im done I chew like 10 pieces of gum day it helps but I cant be chewing gum all the time specially at work. As soon as you do it remind yourself that you want to stop or have your girlfriend or friends remind you that will make you selfconcious and help you stop I use to do it a lot more before but my girfriend keep on telling me to stop because they tasted like blood lol so everytime I remember it I stop also my mother always tell me that I look stupid doing it so all that is helping me a little. You don't say if this is while you sleep or while awake.I do it while asleep only.They have plastic night-guards that are for situations like this.Ask your dentist about one.If it's while you're awake,you will have to control it.Health Question & Answer

I am not so sure what you may need to do about this. It reminds me of the teeth grinding, habit. Try the night guards, and consult a physician whom is smart in this area..Health Question & Answer

Autocannibalism seems more like a psychological problem. But I think everybody accidently bites their lip or cheek once in a while... like those little flaps on the inside of your cheeks (saliva glands.?).Health Question & Answer

Well, I have been chewing my cheeks for a very long time as well.

I can't say that I have completely eradicated it, but I slowed down tremendously. I recently quit biting my nails and after that I slowed down on my cheeks as well. The doctor told me that I have Leukoplakia (looks like thrush) because of the biting and I smoke too. also I started feeling my cheeks get so thing that I was afraid that one day I'd be chewing along and then bit a hole in my cheek. LOL

You have to be very self aware and realize the first second when you are starting to bite your cheek. That is the only way I personally know how you can stop.

Others are saying to try and chew gum, which will probably work 50 percent of the time because you would be chewing gum constantly.

I have no clue what that other person is talking about auto-cannibalism. It's almost the same thing as nail biting but just soft tissue in the mouth. Some people pick and eat scabs. It's just a habit where the hands or some part of the body in general needs to be moving and making repetative motion.
