Question: What does a retainer do.?!.?
I'm about to get my braces off and I've all of a sudden gotten a small gap between my two front teeth, I was wondering if once I get my retainer on, would it kinda close the gap.? Some people have said this is what would happen because of the tightening, but others said no... Does anyone know the answer.?!Health Question & Answer

Retainers "retain' your smile to make sure that all the work your braces did doesn't go to waste. I'm not sure if the retainer will close the gap. You should ask your orthodontist about that one. I think clear retainers can close slight gaps, because I have a friend doesn't wear his retainer often, and his front teeth start getting farther and farther apart, and when he notices that, he puts his retainer in, and then the next day, the gap is closed. But, if you absolutely aren't satisfied with that gap, you should ask your orthodontist about keeping your braces on...I don't know, I'd just go with getting a retainer that can close the gap, because I really want my braces off, and I'm sure you do too. If you have a space openned up between two of your front teeth you should inform your orthodontist. At the time of removing braces there should be nothing left to finish. retainer, as the name applies, only retains whatever its there. Retainer does not move teeth. A retainer only hold teeth where they are. It is best to close the space before braces are removed, because its easier to move teeth with braces than other appliences.

retainers are basically less painful and slightly less effective braces. I forgot to wear mine for abouut 2 months and one of my teeth went out of place. After i started wearing it again, the tooth went back to its original place.
