First wisdom tooth...?!

Question: First wisdom tooth....?
Yesterday, my first wisdom tooth decided to come through the skin. It's causing a lot of pain and discomfort in my gums as well as my jaw on the right side. I'm wondering...how long does it take for it to fully come through.? Right now, only a portion of it is showing. also what's some good pain medication to take. I've tried Aleve, but it's just not working. Oh, and another thing, there is a bit of pain in the other wisdom tooth areas (you know, where they come in at). Could they be coming in soon too.?

I appreciate any advice and help. Thanks!Health Question & Answer

congratulations first of all!

the pain is because the knife-like crown is literally cutting through your skin. this pain will most likely be present for a few days, but after about a week or so (it could be longer, depends on the person), it should be pretty much grown in. your other wisdom teeth are getting ready to come in, which is why you have the pre-pain.

a really great medication that worked for me was advil. and if you cant take advil...what also works is drinking some hot tea.Health Question & Answer

Rinsing your mouth with salt water(not too salty) or antiseptic mouthwash will definitely help, too. try to massage the overlaying gum gently afterwards.

The pain may go away after sometime. But it is possible that your tooth doesn't come out for quiet some time. It might hurt again; a periodic procedure until it fully erupts.

If the tooth is erupting in a right direction, has enough space for growing and is healthy, it's better to keep it and deal with the pain and infection with a course of antibiotics if it becomes necessary. Sometimes you can have the overlaying gum removed surgically.

Ibuprofen can help for the pain.Health Question & Answer

Wisdom teeth usually nedd to be removed. If your life allows do it ASAP. If you are a student or you need to arrange with your work in order to take off, try to make the pain go away until you can have it extracted. I have no better recommendation than using Aleve or Advil for pain. also swishing with warm salt water works. Sometime wisdom tooth pain comes from the preasur of the moving tooth but sometimes it comes from gum infection the loose gum tissue surrounding the wisdom tooth. Again most probably these teeth need to be extracted. I have not seen your x ray so i don't know how bad they are. See a dentist ASAP. Good luck
