When you go to the dentist for cavities do you have to get an X-ray?!

Question: When you go to the dentist for cavities do you have to get an X-ray.?
Answers:
I would recommend getting a x-ray done. It shows how deep the cavity is and also it may show other ones that are not visible to the trained eye. In between the teeth is a common place to get cavities and unless it is a big cavity then the only way to see it is in a x-ray. You don't have to get them every time you go, but a set of bite-wings once a year is good. Insurances are now paying for them to be done twice a year as preventative precautions. If you are worried about radiation exposure, don't be! There is not a lot of radiation exposure in a few tiny x-rays. You get more exposure just driving to the dentist! :)Health Question & Answer

X-rays help your dentist to find out about the decays; specially the ones that are between teeth and can not be seen by examination.

Event if you're in pain it doesn't necessarily mean that the pulp(core) of your tooth is involved (which needs root canal therapy). X-ray helps to determine if that is the case or not.

Sometimes the decay is very extended into the root that can not be treated and should be extracted. That is too, sth which can be found out by an x-ray.

It is better to let your dentist decide whether to do it or not.Health Question & Answer

X-Rays are not healthy, so rest assured your dentist will only recommend one if he thinks it is necessary. And even then, he *should* ask your permission.Health Question & Answer

You don't have to. When I go for my cleanings I don't get one everytime... to much radiation exposureHealth Question & Answer

yeap, and you would want them too...Health Question & Answer
