A short, boring question about teeth? =D?!

Question: A short, boring question about teeth.? =D.?
I have sensitive teeth, I can't eat anything sweet to be honest because my gums are quite receding (I think that's the right term) and I have a lot of nerve exposure going on. I've always looked after my teeth, brush twice a day and use mouth wash :D I think the problem is I brush to vigorously. Tsk! Can't win! Any good suggestions to help me out.? I'm missing out on all the best things in life, like cookies and icecream, and cookie dough ice cream! =O! XX =PHealth Question & Answer

I agree with trying the sensodyne toothpaste, really any toothpaste with potassium nitrate will work. Check the list of ingredients for this one and you'll know it works. Use a mouthwash with fluoride as it can also help reduce sensitivity, Listerine makes one. Nothing will reverse the recession once it's there but you can do things to prevent furthur recession for occurring. Try brushing the teeth in the direction they grow, top down and bottom up, never any other way. The reason scrubbing and circles will not work for you is because you are pushing the brush up into the gums at some point during the motion which encourages more recession. If you add a small vibration at the gumline to this brushing technique then that would be the modified stillman technique of brushing. Health Question & Answer

you could try Sensodyne toothpaste, it will help with the sensitivity, you can brush with it as much as you need to, you can also take some on your finger and rub it on the sensitive areas and just leave it there. I would recommend that you get an extra soft bristle toothbrush, brushes with harder bristles can cause gum recession. You can also try, instead of scrubbing back and forth with your brush, going in small circles, it is called the Stillman's method of brushing if you want you can google it and there should be some demonstrations on the web. Another thing you can try is brushing with the opposite hand, it will feel awkward but you wont be able to press as hard.Health Question & Answer

Floss!!!!!! Spend the $80-$100 to get a Sonicare toothbrush.

Flossing cleans out between your teeth and just under the gum line between teeth. No tooth brush can reach that area. If you don't floss you aren't cleaning this part of your teeth regardless how hard/often/long your brush.

The Sonicare toothbrush will help you control the amount of time you brush and make your mouth feel considerably cleaner than with a hand brush.

Once your gums recede there is nothing you can do to get them to grow back. Only a periodontist can help you.Health Question & Answer

First I would have a discussion with my dentist about this. Tell him/her your concern and see if you have options to help you. If not, I would try using a more sensitive toothpaste. They make a really good one called sensodyne. I have heard that it works great. Good luck!Health Question & Answer
