i have so many fillings! um no it does not hurt really and you feel the numbing instantly. it doesn't hurt, it's actually less pain than a blood shot. my advice is don't look at the needle, like tell your dentist not to tell you when it's coming so you can close your eyes. after wards though, it feels like there's a little scratch in the place where they shot the needle, but it goes away. and btw they shoot the needle in the gums close to the tooth they're going to fill. hope this helps.Health Question & Answer

It doesn't have to hurt at all, but it depends on the skill of the dentist. I went to a dentist once who held a Q-tip with numbing medicine on it right up against the spot he was going to inject. Then, as he advanced the needle, he would squirt a little of the Novocaine as he went along, effectively numbing ahead of his needle. It was incredible, I felt absolutely nothing at all, not even a pinch!

Other dentists I've been to have not been so talented, but still it's not just awful unless you're having work on one of your upper canines. They have to put the needle up (what feels like) under your nose for those. The ones on the sides aren't bad.

Talk to your dentist now before you go in. Tell him you're nervous about the shot and the whole procedure (if indeed you are). Dentists can write you a prescription for something like valium to calm you. He can also explain his technique and alleviate some of your fears.

Good luck, hope this helped...

The needle hurt with sharp pain when I had to get it, but you just have to patiently wait for it to be over. It's more painful than a normal blood shot because the gums, where the needle is injected, hurts more than the fingertips or other skin surface areas. Fortunately, you will be numb and not feel much afterwards.

If you're still scared, you could tell your dentist that you're afraid of needles, and perhaps he'll be more gentle with you. Dentists are beginning to cater to their sensitive patients a little more than they once did.Health Question & Answer

It is only a mild discomfort, because they swab some analgesic over the part of the mouth they inject first. The shot is no worse than a piercing. The worst part of a filling for me was the last time I used the gas only, it wore off too soon and I could feel them drilling and everything. I only use the shots from now on.Health Question & Answer

I just got a filling about a week ago. And I was nervous about the needle also, but its not that bad! I mean sure you can feel it a little bit, but it doesn't hurt. They should shoot it on the outside gum of the tooth that is getting filled.

Good Luck!Health Question & Answer
