Dental question: Do I need special care?!

Question: Dental question: Do I need special care.?
I had my last molar on th top right removed. It was not a fun ordeal it had 4 roots and also was aprtially fused to my jawbone. a huge hole was stuitched shut. This was 2 days ago. My face is so swollen right now. I woke up in a completely sweaty shirt. I felt up there and a piece of tooth is still sticking out slightly from the side of the gumbed. Right now i am waiting to call the dentist. My pain is at like 10. Can anyone tell me if this is part of healing or if i am infected.?Health Question & Answer

It would probably be a good idea to contact your dentist who did the extraction. Most patients say the second day is the worst after an extraction and by the third day they are starting to feel better.

I don't think this is a piece of the tooth, we check those carefully when they are removed for missing roots that may have broken off. This may be some of the bony fragments working their way out; these are pieces of the bone that break free when the tooth is luxated loose.

You should take your prescribed pain medication and about 2 hours later you can also take an Ibuprofen such as Advil or Motrin at a 600mg dose every 6 hours. This will help to reduce the inflammation and swelling which is the main reason for the pain you are in. Use a hot damp towel on the cheek as a compress; this will help to relieve the discomfort and get the blood flowing back into the swollen area which in turn will reduce the inflammation and swelling. Ice is only good for the first 24 hours, so use the moist hot compress, you should feel relief immediately.

Don't forget to rinse really well with warm (as warm as possible) salt water solution. Doing this will soothe the extraction site, tissue and especially reduce the bacteria count in your mouth which will promote better healing.

If you're pain isn't reduced by day three you may want to ask your dentist to take a look for a possible infection. It's unlikely that you would develop a dry socket with sutures placed.Health Question & Answer

its part of the healing. when a dentist pulls a tooth, small slivers of bone and tooth stay attached to the gums. they irritate and hurt but asa soon as they are removed it seems the pain starts to fade. ibuprofen and ice packs help until u can see the doc to pull the slivers out. if u were infected, you would be able to taste the infection, which dosen't tast good. your mouth should be better in a week. also try washing ur mouth with WARM, salt water.Health Question & Answer

Go to the doctors office. If you felt some tooth left over they still got work to do.Health Question & Answer

It sounds like an infection. I, also, wanted to point out that the "piece of tooth" that you feel, is not a piece of tooth at all. It is a bony spicule and it is very common to have these occur after extractions. It is also very common to mistake them for a piece of tooth, but they are not. These generally work their way out on their own, but can be removed by the dentist if they are troublesome. I would say the socket has become infected. When the office opens, I am sure the dentist will want to see the area. They will likely open and drain and send you home with an antibiotic. Until then, apply a moist heat pack to the area. It will increase your swelling (warning) but it will help to draw out the infection. also, I would recommend taking ibuprofen, as it is an antiinflammatory. Hope I helped.Health Question & Answer
