Crowns - if you've gotten one....what's that like?!

Question: Crowns - if you've gotten one....what's that like.?
I recently got dental insurance and will most likely be getting a root canal and a crown on a broken tooth.

What is a crown like.?.? I've looked this up online and I've seen examples and whatnot, but they never give an individual person's opinion. Once you get it, does it feel any different to your tongue, than the rest of your teeth.?.? Can you tell a difference.?.?

also, do white ones last as long as metal.?.? Do they even DO metal anymore.?.? I DON'T want metal. lol....

Anyhow, please let me know. Thanks!! :) Health Question & Answer

I have many crowns! Some I've had for many years, and others have been put there within the past year. Your dentist can tell you what type of crown is best for you. Mine are mostly gold, but I have some that are white (porcelain) on the visible side and gold on the back. As for "metal"....gold is not a bad thing in your mouth! It is long-lasting, safe, and does not alter your taste. I can't tell you which teeth are crowned without looking in the mirror, so that should answer your question about a difference in feel. There's not even a difference in feeling with the temporary crown, which is placed there for the time you wait for the permanent one to be made. This procedure has changed over the years and to me is no longer painful nor lengthy. Good luck to you! Enjoy hanging on to your natural teeth!Health Question & Answer

Having the dental work to get the crown isn't exactly fun, but once you have it you can't tell the difference -- by feeling it with your tongue or looking in the mirror. They do still offer metal ones as well as porcelain ones because some people can't afford the porcelain ones, but the dentist will give you whichever you prefer. The porcelain ones can crack easier than the metal, but even so they still last several years.Health Question & Answer
