Is it possible that a new retainer could be so tight that it could move your teeth like braces do?!

Question: Is it possible that a new retainer could be so tight that it could move your teeth like braces do.?
My retainer broke and I just got my new one yesterday, but the wire was so tight that it didn't fit and the orthodontist did something to it to make it fit. It was still tight but I didn't think it would be a problem.

Last night (I only wear them at night), only an hour or so after I had fallen asleep, I woke up and my teeth all the way around the top were really sore, like more sore than braces ever made them feel. I took some pain reliever and just figured it was because I hadn't been wearing a retainer while they made the new one, but now this morning it hurts even worse.

I swear when I bite down, the whole front top ridge hits my bottom row of teeth, which used to it didn't do. It's supposed to rest right in front of my lower teeth and my back teeth contact, but now I have to make a effort to pull my lower jaw past my top teeth so I can bite on my back teeth.

Am I just going insane because I haven't worn a top retainer in two weeks, or could it really have moved my teeth so much.?

Answers:
The retainer was meant to move your teeth. Call your dentist or orthodontist and ask him or her. It would be a kind of painful each time he tightens it. My daughter had retainers and she complained of pain too. She has beautiful teeth now though.Health Question & Answer
