Dentists= Why did I need to have laughing gas, before they knocked me out?!

Question: Dentists= Why did I need to have laughing gas, before they knocked me out.?
I went to the dentist a couple days ago to have a molar pulled. They sat me down and gave me laughing gas while we waiting for the dentist to come. While I sat there I just listened to the assistants talk back and forth. After a while I asked if I was going to get a needle to knock me out and she said yes but I wont notice it. Then I heard one assistant tell the other assistant that the dentist was chatting that's why he wasn't there yet. I seriously think I sat there for almost 8 minutes with a buzz. lol. Finally he came in and said ok, say night night..then they gave me my shot and I was out.

Can someone please tell me why I had to be put on laughing gas, I cant think of one reason why!.? Shouldn't I have gotten oxygen instead.?
Then when I woke up, I had no shoe on.?.? They told me because it was easier to put the heart rate monitor on my toe. But how is that...they had to take my shoe and sock off to do that but my hand is right there!! lol Im so confused. But hey...at least my tooth came out and I didn't have to pay too much, so no complaints there.

KELLY,
gas is used in order to have you more relaxed and feel at ese for this procedure. Oxygen is always mixed together with nitrous oxide (gas) when given.
The "thing" put into the socket after the extraction was most likely a dressing to prevent dry socket. Dry socket usually occurs 24-48 hours post surgery.Health Question & Answer

I think they meant Blood Pressure monitor. I had one that they kept on my finger when I was in labor. When things got tough they did move it to my big toe. If you take one hand and squeeze your other thumb you can feel the pressure. It is a great spot to measure BP instead of doing it manually with a cuff. If they were working around your face, concievably, they may have moved it so that they wouldn't bump it. They moved mine to my toe because it was getting in the way.
If it was a really "cool" dentist. he may have seen you were nervous. however if it was lazy assistants they just didn't want to have to deal with you while waiting. Doping up the patient is the lazy man's way out but I have hear it happens
On a serious note: did you feel "weird in any places other than your toe".Really, people (men and women both) have been molested while under. Trust your instincts especially if you feel someone has changed your clothes around, etc.Health Question & Answer

Ahhh you sure you wasn't doing a Key Stone Cops movie...if you know what those are....(1) laughing gas (Nitrous Oxide) is not mandatory, it's used to help relax a hyper or just plain nervous patient....but not a hard fast requirement.(2) And by the way, when you get the Nitrous Oxide it is in fact a mix of the gas and Oxygen.(3)..They could never under any circumstance give you pure Nitrous Oxide..(4)..As for removing your shoe....the heart rate monitor goes around your ankle or your arm not your toe....It could be they put an Oxygen monitor on your toe but it could be on a finger just as easy, in fact far easier.....I'm glad your extraction was a successful experience......Good luck and I wish you well.Health Question & Answer
