Do Dentist's always STERILIZE equipment?!

Question: Do Dentist's always STERILIZE equipment.?
One of the reasons i hate going to the dentist is because you don't know if they just disinfected their dental tools or if they actually sterilized them. Especially if you are one of the last appointments for a deep cleaning of the day. Does this issue not worry you.? Health Question & Answer

your question is a very good one. I am a registered dental hygienist, so I am behind the scenes :) I have worked in 3 offices and can gladly say yes, they do sterilize their instruments. Most offices use either a chemical or a heat method of sterilization. Heat is most common. It reaches a HIGH temperature killing ALL bacteria of any sort. I do believe SOME offices would say just wipe down certain things that should actually be sterilized, but it would take a sick person to just disinfect actual instruments. So my guess is your safe. I would really pay attention to the office as a whole to get a feel for how sanitary it really is. Does the staff wash their hands before seeing patients.? Do they have plastic barriers on things.? Oh and a BIG one, do they open the package of instruments in front of you.? Good luck. I really wouldn't worry too much about it. Health Question & Answer

RALPH,
EVERY DENTAL TOOL IS ALWAYS STERILIZED AFTER EVERY PATIENT OR IT'S THROWN AWAY AFTER 1 USE IF IT CANNOT BE STERILIZED.
next time you're at the dentist just ask how are the tools sterilized.?Health Question & Answer

Yes, they have to. I've never thought about it really though, I guess I just assumed it and knew that they have to. Health Question & Answer

yes because if they didn't and it was already used and they use it it for another person the other person might get sick ewww.......... no commentHealth Question & Answer

Yes they have to. It is unsanitary if they don't. And if they didn't that would draw a lot of anger to the patients!Health Question & Answer
