Going to a new orthodondist? Why do they want to do things so differently?!

Question: Going to a new orthodondist.? Why do they want to do things so differently.?
I am going to a new orthodontist because I moved states. This woman wants to put a whole new different set of braces on my teeth!

Isn't that bit odd.? Why can't she work with my own set.? (Mine are in good shape--nothing broken)

I've been using rubber bands, and she told me to stop entirely. She is against them...

After a series of other crap, she noted that I would need orthognathic surgery (corrective jaw surgery)

I had never heard of taking my slightly bad bite to such extremes! My old ortho (which I had been seeing for multiple phases since i was EIGHT) had only EVER mentioned that I have a prominent jaw.

Opinions please! My mom doesn't understand why I am so skeptical, yet again she knows nothing about my previous orthodontic work or my old place--I just moved in with her. I'm fighting with her about it, and she just CAN't see my side.

I want to get good teeth as painless and least time-consuming as possible!Health Question & Answer

Answers:
That does seem very extreme. I would insist on seeing someone for a second opinion. I would also call your old orthodontist and see if he knows anyone or knows of anyone, that he can refer you to. You might end up with a 'friend of a friend' type of referral.

If your mother refuses to listen to you and forces you to see this orthodontist, I would call your father (I assume). In most cases the second parent does have a certain amount of authority in the healthcare decisions of their children.

Most importantly and do this first, sit down with your mom and talk to her about your previous treatment. Explain your concerns, CALMLY. Ask then for a second opinion. It may help to write everything out in advance. Then you can be sure that you will not forget anything.Health Question & Answer
