Question: Do braces hurt a lot, all answers are appreciated! .?
Ohk, I am getting braces soon, and I am just wondering do they hurt a lot.? How about getting them on do they hurt.? Do they hurt right after or does it take a couple hours to kick in.? Do you get a lot of sores in your mouth.? Does the wax that they give you have a bad taste.? Does the elastics hurt when you have to get them.? Thanks for all your answers! Health Question & Answer

I'm not going to pretend they don't hurt because they do, the pain doesn't really kick in till about four or five hours later and it gets worse the second day you have them,for the first three or four days they really hurt and you will probably find it hard to eat, especially hard or crunchy foods like toast and biscuits, you will also find it hard to brush your teeth so i suggest mouthwash for the first few days too.
Getting them on doesn't hurt but it feels uncomfortable as you're not used to having pieces of metal on your teeth, as for sores you do get a few but if when they are first put on you can feel certain ones more than others i suggest putting on "Brace Guard wax" you can get this from your orthodontist and it is places right over the brace bracket. The wax does not really have a taste and once placed on brace is very smooth but if bracket is wet it can slip off and become irritating. You can wear the wax whilst eating but mind it doesn't fall off, but it is safe to swallow. Try taking ibuprofens and paracetamols regularly to relieve the pain.
after the first few days you also get used to them being there and you won't find it hard to eat, talk etc. the pain goes away and your mouth tissue gets tougher so ulcers don't appear so often. Although if your wire isn't cut off short enough at the back it can cut in to your mouth and you should tell your orthodontist when a new wire is fitted that it is causing discomfort.
the elastics are only needed if you have an over bite but just like getting on new braces they do hurt for a while but you'll get used to them.
brushing your teeth can be hard but you can get a special tooth brush to go in between the wire and brackets, replace your brush regularly and if you brush directly on brace it can damage brush and brace, other things which can damage brace are hard sweets, toffee and tugging at brace but brackets aren't replaced immediately. (i've lost two about 6 months ago :S)
Untill you feel like you can eat properly i suggest eating foods such as jacket potatoes, pasta, chocolate (melts), and soft bread and soup.
You don't have braces forever so it'll pay off in the end but you get used to them, they ache for a day or two when you get them tightened but taking pain killers can relieve this pain also.

Okay, well this is from personal experience...when they're putting the braces in, it doesn't hurt a bit since they're mainly just gluing stuff in...but give it a couple of hours and your mouth begins to feel sore and your teeth start hurting especialy if you touch them. You can't really eat proper food until after a week or so but don't worry it's worth the pain.=)
Oh and by the 'elastic' i assume you mean the coloured bits that you get on your braces...well all i can say is that without them, your mouth would turn probably turn to shreds. I'm not meaning to scare you it's just that's the main thing that stops the sharp metal bits from hooking onto your lip.
And btw the wax is tasteless.
But really, don't worry...soon enough you'll forget that you even have the braces (until someone points out that your supposedly 'blue' braces have turned green). ;P

I found that they only hurt for the first few days after having them adjusted (tightened). It's a strange feeling, almost like your teeth are loose! But the feeling doesn't last that long and it's not so intense that you need pain killers.
I only had one spot where the metal was pressing into my mouth and used the wax. It's mint flavored, but really doesn't taste like much.

Braces dont hurt real badly. When they put them on your teeth, it feels weird but you'll get used to it after a couple of days. My mouth was only sore for about three days. The brackets get caught on the sides of my mouth, but its not that bad.
Ask for the nonflavored wax.

Yes braces hurt I had them and it hurts every darn time you go in and have them adjusted. you may get sores in your mouth I did and the wax did help some but it doesnot have a bad taste. the elastic does not hurt. Good luck the end results are worth it!!!Health Question & Answer
i never had braces but my sister has them and they do hurt but when you first get them they hurt for about 4 or 3 days but if you have alot of problems on your teeth then they would hurt alot because all the work they would have to doHealth Question & Answer
NAH, 4 ME THEY DIDNT. IT JUST FELT TIGHT THAT'S ALL. FIRST FEW WEEKS, ITS UNCOMFORTABLE, BUT DUZNT HURT. I NEVR USED THE WAX COZ I DIDNT NEED EM.
