I had three impacted wisdom teeth removed a week ago. I am still in extreme pain, is this normal?!

Question: I had three impacted wisdom teeth removed a week ago. I am still in extreme pain, is this normal.?
Its been a week since I've had my 3 wisdom teeth extracted. I'm completely out of pain medication, I have been since the second day of having the procedure done. The pain has been non stop, I'm talking excruciating pain. I can push it a side for a little bit but it just never goes away. I had no swelling in my face, the bleeding only lasted a day, I just have pain.

I haven't been doing a thing to irritate the areas. I have been dealing with my food situation very well, staying completely away from whole foods. I have been eating soups with mushy veggies, but that even irritates it. I am a smoker and I have not picked up a cigarette since the operation.

I followed post surgery procedures. I didn't eat anything after 10 pm., I did have a couple sips of water. They tell you not to smoke and by the end of the night I had 1 full cigarette. I didn't smoke the morning before my procedure though. Now I've been smoke free for a week.... exciting let me tell you.

I should mention I flew on an airplane 3 days after the procedure, and I did have a connecting flight. My mouth hurt but nothing more than what it was. I kept gauze in my mouth their was no bleeding. I took a sleeping pill, along with a pain pill, and passed out.

What is your opinions of this situation. Should my mouth be throbbing like this.? When I say throb I mean my entire mouth not just the area of extraction. It's pretty severe pain. People tell me different things like it will hurt, no it wont, so I don't know what to do. Give me some feedback, should I see a doctor.? Do you think there's a infection, a dry socket, or just normal healing.? Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

Hi Bianca,
Pain should not be that bad that long after your procedure. The one thing it sounds like is a dry socket, meaning the clot didn't form in place of the tooth, and that my friend is horrible pain! It seems like you did well following the directions and by not smoking. I would call your dentist first thing in the morning and get in. There is no reason for you to be suffering like that... :( Tell him about your airplane ride, and that it started after that. It has been known that going up in high elevation can trigger a toothache in another tooth. So it may not even be from your extractions. The pressure on a tooth that has an infection tends to have a throbbing feeling and is called an abscess. It kind of feels like a heartbeat in your face right.? So, it could either be a dry socket or an infection in another tooth! Call your dentist! Good Luck!Health Question & Answer

If you are in extreme pain, especially that long after the procedure, than by all means, call your dentist. This would qualify as an emergency and you can probably see him/her immediately.Health Question & Answer

No this is not normal, i had four impacted wisdom teeth removed, i was in pain for only two days, go to surgeon right away.Health Question & Answer

your probally fine my teacher had pain for like a week and a half but if you dont feel fine you might want to call your dentistHealth Question & Answer

Definitely not normal. Extreme pain should very rarely be present past about day 3 post extraction. Depending on the difficulty of the extraction, sometimes a light, dull pain can persist for this long.

I would guess dry socket. You need to get back and see the dentist that took them out and let him know what's going on. He should help you out to treat these complications and get your mouth to heal properly. Probably won't even cost you anything if you go back to where you had it done.

The minimal smoking, medications, and plane flight should have nothing to do with your problemHealth Question & Answer
