When they originally put them on, they 'cement' the little metal bits onto each teeth and then they put 'brackets' over the back teeth. These have little hooks on. Then the wire goes across all the metal bits (on each tooth) and into the hooks on the brackets. The wire is held on with little elastic bands.
To tighten them, they simply remove the elastic bands and take out the wire, then add a new piece of wire and new elastic bands. The wire gets looser the more you wear it, so a brand new bit will make it feel tighter again. Health Question & Answer

Well, you know about brackets, I'm sure. It's the little square things you see on your teeth. They put a wire in to move your teeth where they need to be. To tighten them, they just insert a new wire.
Everyone makes it sound more painful than it is.
Just bring like 3 aspirin with you and take them immediately after getting your braces on. Even if it doesn't hurt yet.
There is a moderate amount of pain, but don't freak out, it's not too bad.

I've had braces for over a year now and I kknow that when they tighten it I think they mght just replace the wire with a tighter wire or somehow just make it tighter. It hurts a little but you'll be fine :)Health Question & Answer
