For people that have gone through this, some help please?!

Question: For people that have gone through this, some help please.?
If my dentist refers me to an Orthodontist for my headaches due to excessive teeth grinding while I am sleeping, what can I expect.?
I do wear a mouth guard every night and I have been grinding them like crazy, mainly because I have a lot of nightmares and that is when I just go nuts... and I wake up with horrible jaw pain and headaches.
What can be done about this.? And what will the doctor do.?
My current dentist cant handle this obviously because she is not trained. I don't even know if this is covered by my insurance.. I have United Concordia.. I guess I can call them... but, before I go through all the trouble of being referred, I want to know if anyone has gone through this and what will be done.

You can go to a dentist that specialized in TMD (Temporomandibular join disorder). They might be able to know a little better. Some orthodontists do specialize in it, but some general dentists do too. As far as your insurance covering it, it varies plan by plan. The only way to find out, is to ask the dental office for the ADA code and give that to the insurance company. Sometimes the dentists can use a tens machine to help relax your muscles and align your jaw, that might fix your headaches. Look online, most dentists have websites, you can look for them in your area. Health Question & Answer
