What is dry socket and how is it treated?!

Question: What is dry socket and how is it treated.?
Hi im at the dentist in the morning as i have been told i might have a dry socket. i had a wisdom tooth and molar removed on friday, when they removed the wisdom they said it had a severe abscess on it, they said nothing else to me, just told me to rinse often with salty water which i am doing. I rang them today as im still in great pain and i can see creamy / green stuff sat in the hole where my wisdom tooth was

So can some one please tell me what dry socket is and how is it treated.?

Thanks in AdvanceHealth Question & Answer

Basically it's an infection of the wound where the tooth was - it'll probably be treated with anti-biotics. It's caused by you losing the blood-clot that was protecting it and then something might have got into it... nasty.

I feel for you - I had mine out at the end of the summer and I was petrified of getting dry socket. My gap's actually hurting in sympathy!

Good luck - and remember, don't use straws! Straws make a vacuum in your mouth which can remove blood-clots (for when you've sorted out the infection).Health Question & Answer

You are going to have to go back to the dentist. If it is a dry socket then you have lost the protective blood clot. The green stuff would be infection and you should be getting treated with antibiotics. The dentist will also have to rinse out the socket and pack it with medicated analgesics and antiseptics. When I had my wisdom teeth pulled I got a dry socket so I know how painful it can be. The dentist should also inform you of what type of pain reliever you should use. The sooner you get it treated the better. Good luck.Health Question & Answer

EEEP! you really don't want a dry socket.
It's arguably the most excruciating thing you can experience.

A dry socket is where the clot from an extraction site gets dislodged and fails to form tissue over the jawbone socket. As a result, the jawbone is exposed to all the bacteria in your mouth and inevitably becomes infected.

Infected bone is horrible. it hurts like nothing else you've ever known.
the whole side of your face will ache like misery itself.

Treatment consists of systemic antibiotics and the best painkillers money can buy.

I sincerely hope you don't have to go through this.
Cheers.
