Do dentists automatically put white fillings in teeth on the NHS?!

Question: Do dentists automatically put white fillings in teeth on the NHS.?
My dentist has done. I thought you had to had to pay for those because I know they cost more than silver, and I thought they only used silver fillings on NHS. Maybe I'm just lucky I have a good dentist but they look great anyway, and he put them in 2 teeth too.Health Question & Answer

Its just what they do now. That's what I got. I didn't have to ask, and it wasn't my front teeth. Silver fillings are now 'antiquated'. Health Question & Answer

Hello, I think you will find the general rule is that when the facial surface of a front tooth needs a filing the Dentist will use a tooth colored composite material....If the cavity is on the chewing surface of a back tooth the dentist will most likely use the silver amalgam filing unless you have told him to use a tooth colored composite....Sometimes when the chewing surface requiring a filing is very large the dentist will suggest that a Porcelain unit be created to fill the cavity....Health Question & Answer

if they're near the front, they'll be free
