I have a dental question, i need help fast. please?!

Question: I have a dental question, i need help fast. please.?
I have brittle teeth because of antibiotics that i was on when i was younger, and my very back, top tooth is slowly breaking more and more. My mother is setting up an appointment for me to get it pulled this coming Wednesday.
Is it a better idea to have it pulled or to have a root canal and save the tooth.?
i was thinking that maybe, since the tooth is already breaking, it is a better idea to just get it pulled, but i know its silly but my worries are that i wont be able to eat things like steak the same, and that it will feel weird to not have that tooth while i still have my others.

also, they will not be giving me laughing gas, or be putting me to sleep. they will just be numbing me. does anyone have any feedback or anything they could tell me that might help.?

thanks.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Depends on if the tooth is vital to your mouth or not. Some teeth should not be pulled because it will make room for teeth to drift into the same spot or it could be a tooth vital for eating. If the dentist sees no problem with pulling the tooth, have it pulled instead of getting a root canal. Root canals are very expensive and involve a few trips to the dentist. Not only would you have to pay for the root canal itself (that's about $800-$900 right there), but you would also be looking at getting a crown (which would be another $800-$900 on top of the root canal charge). Unfortunately, dentists cannot just do only the root canal. When a root canal is performed, the tooth becomes dead and would eventually fall out or break anyway, thereby wasting the $800 you spent on the procedure.

Your dentist will be able to make a more informed choice on your case when you see him.

You will get used to the feeling of having no tooth there when it is pulled and you will adapt to eating normally again. It's just like when you lost your teeth as a child. It felt weird to have nothing there but after a day or two, it just feels normal.

No, they will not put you to sleep or use nitrous oxide. Those types of anesthesia are for very serious matters, such as oral surgery. Nitrous isn't used very often anymore for anything really. A simple drug from the -caine family (Novocaine, Octocaine, Septocaine) should be enough to keep you from feeling any pain. The dentist may also numb the area with topical numbing gel before he gives the injection. This will happen if you get your tooth pulled or if you will be having the root canal.

If you keep calm and follow the doctor's advice, you should be absolutely fine. There's nothing to worry about (except the financial burden, of course, if you have any).Health Question & Answer

I don't know the answer to the root canal vs. pulling question; but I can help with the numbing question. When I got my wisdom teeth pulled, I wasn't put to sleep or given laughing gas...I just got the novacaine to numb it. This worked just fine. I couldn't feel a thing and it was nice that I wasn't all groggy and out of it after the procedure was finished.Health Question & Answer

my teeth are the same. last june my back tooth started to disintegrate and i was faced with the same worries. a root canal is very very expensive and because your tooth is brittle it is more than likely to need a cap. i think it would have cost 1200 euro to get this done so being a student i got the tooth pulled. i cannot notice the difference now and i can eat anything with ease. they are your teeth though and it does depend on how much u think your tooth is worth. a good dentist will pull ur tooth with ease once he studies your root alignment. good luck!!Health Question & Answer

it depends on several things...

is this tooth a permanent one.? if it is how much has broken away.? there is only so much they can save.

if it is a baby tooth then another will take its place.

but don't be worried about losing anyway, you will be able to eat what you have in the past as you have other teeth that can chew.

many ppl have fewer teeth than you do and they eat everything just fine. don't worryHealth Question & Answer

Depends if the tooth is permanent if it is i think it might be better to have a root canal, but if its a milk tooth then you should get it pulled, but talk to your dentist about options
hope this helps ;)Health Question & Answer

that depends on your age, root canal, if you are young and i suspect you are. and also they can rebuild that tooth and it will last for years and years to come. dont pull.Health Question & Answer

just get it pulled. It would be different if it was one of your front teeth.Health Question & Answer

Save a tooth whenever possible. If that is not an option then you can just get a bridge. Root canals are not very fun, but not as bad as they seem. Getting a tooth pulled only takes a minute after the Novocain takes effect. They will probably give you painkillers, I saved mine because it really did not hurt to bad only a little sore. PMS is way worse! I had weak teeth and had to get all my top teeth capped at 22 yrs old and have a mouth of root canals under the veneers! Was no day at the picnic but, not that bad. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

Save the tooth!!! You only get one set of teeth and when you downgrade to dentures food does not taste as good or is as easy to eat. Think about it dentures cover the entire top of your mouth and that aids in tasting the juices in our food. I have seen so many people regret having teeth pulled and it may cost more to save it but would you do the same if it were your eyesight.? Who needs 2 eyes.?

As far as using gas or being knocked out entirely those are very unnecessary if your dentist is good and you are not a mental case. The worst part is the shot and you wouldn't get knocked out for fillings would you.?

Don't worry many people have the same fears just discuss them with your dentist or go get a second opinion. Knowledge is power!Health Question & Answer
